Theater Review : The World Goes ‘Round
I saw The World Goes ‘Round tonight at the Walnut Street Theatre (in the Studio 5 space). Honestly, I’ve never seen a cabaret performance before (this is where they just sing a whole bunch of songs, without having a serious plot in the mix). I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it, but I’ve got to be honest… I really liked it ! 11th Hour Theatre Company put the show together, and I think they did a great job ! The show takes different songs from lots of different shows (like “New York, New York”, “All That Jazz”, etc) but using props, wardrobe, and character interaction, they gave a reallying interesting twist to each song…I think the whole cast was very strong, and really played well together, but in particular, I liked Marybeth Gorman. I think she did a great job of bringing out each of her characters in the show…
There’s only a few more shows left, and they’re playing in a small space, so I say get off your butt, and check it out…. Click here for tickets
On Vacation in St. Martin
It’s been a few days since I last wrote ! Here’s why : at the last minute, Meg and I both realized that we had a less than busy week, so we slapped together a last minute vacation plan, and took off for the Caribbean ! We flew into St. Martin on Sunday night, and drove up to the French side of the island. The whole island (both French and Dutch sides) is only 6 miles long, so it didn’t take very long ! We stayed here for 3 days (more on that later), then on Wednesday, drove back down to the Dutch side of the island to stay out the reminder of the week. The weather has been gorgeous, and I’ll post up some pictures when we get back.Upcoming Theater : The Last 5 Years
One of my very, very favorite theater soundtracks is “The Last 5 Years“. The music is just great, and the twist of having one character move forward through time, and the other move backwards is kind of cool. After listening to the soundtrack a couple of times, I really wanted to see a live production ! Well, I just found out that the Narberth Community Theater is going to perform one show on December 15th. This seems like a pretty difficult piece to sing, and I can’t figure out how a community theatre is able to put this together for just one show. It seems like a crazy amount of work for one performance. But, be that as it may, I really want to check it out. Click Here to buy tickets.
Theatre Review : The Seven Year Itch
I saw the The Seven Year Itch last night at the Montgomery Theater up in Souderton. The Montgomery Theater is one of my favorite theatres for a long list of reasons :- Very small, intimate performance space (there’s only 4 or 5 rows of seats)
- Strong, consistent performances from the (often) local cast
- Great variety in the productions
Well, with that said, I wasn’t crazy about The Seven Year Itch. I wasn’t familiar with the story before seeing this production, and I was kind of surprised at some of the turns throughout the plot. It felt like a 50-year old play dealing with a controversial topic (at the time). Now, it just kind of feels dated (and no longer controversial).
I think I might have also cast the role of Richard a bit differently (he was played by Kristopher Yoder, who I thought did a STELLAR job in Rounding Third, also this season at the Montgomery Theater). I pictured Richard being a bit more sophisticated, and a little less… umm…. goofy. He just kept running around with this larger-than-life comical flair. It kind of reminded me of Fred Flintstone. Maybe that’s how the character is supposed to be played (I’ve never seen the movie), but it just didn’t feel right to me.
One the up side, I enjoyed the character of Dr. Brubaker, played by Paul Dake. Good substance, a fun dialect, and you got to see a few layers down as the play progressed.
Would I reccomend it ? Well, if you’re nostalgic to see the story, then sure. Otherwise, I’d probably say go sneak in a showing of Empty Plate in the Cafe du Grand Boeuf at the Arden Theatre.
